The wood of Rode locus is an attractive burgundy, deep red, or orange tone, and some of it can even have dark black stripes highlighting a strong visible grain pattern. It can exhibit quite a large color variation from one board to the next.

Jatoba heartwood varies from a light orange-brown to a darker reddish brown, sometimes with contrasting darker grayish brown streaks. Its color tends to darken upon exposure to light. Its Sapwood is a light grayish yellow.

Like most of the wood species we offer, Jatoba has a natural resistance to water, insects and rot. Jatoba is exceptionally stiff, strong, and hard—representing great value for woodworkers.

Description

Jatoba (Hymenaea courbaril) grows to an average height of 40m (120 feet) with diameters up to 1m (2-4 feet). In the retail market, Jatoba is most often referred to as Brazilian Cherry, but it is not a cherry wood. It has also been called Locust or Rode Locus (RLO) in different areas of South America.

Rode locus wood is an attractive burgundy, deep red, or orange tone. some of it may display dark black stripes highlighting a strong visible grain pattern. It can exhibit quite a large color variation from one board to the next.

Jatoba is rated as being very durable in regards to rot resistance, and is also resistant to termites and most other insects. (Though it has been reported to be susceptible to attack from marine borers.).
