It would be hard to overstate Black Walnut’s popularity among woodworkers, because, despite its hardness, walnut is exceptionally easy to work with. The demand for fine quality logs often exceeds the available supply since some of the best wood is often made into veneer for doors and cabinetry.
Premium furniture
Nogal is an excellent furniture grade hardwood. It must be dried carefully to avoid checking (cracking). It works well with tools, receives nails and can be glued. It is superior to all other woods for gunstocks because of the way it keeps its shape.
Unique pattern
Peruvian walnut is reported to be popular for decorative veneer. The wood produces a great variety of very unusual figures which are reported to be highly desirable in veneers. The figures include crotches, swirls, stumpwood, stripe or ribbon, mottle, snail and occasional burls.
